Out of the Further

As someone who’s watched every Insidious movie TWICE, I couldn’t miss the newest chapter, Insidious: Out of the Further. I have just gone to the cinema expecting the same creepy atmosphere that made me fall in love with the franchise years ago, which is now my favorite horror series.

The movie this year follows Gemma, a young mother who discovers that she has a rare ability: not only can she enter the Further, but she can also bring spirits back into the real world, and vice versa, real object into the Further! That twist raises the stakes and introduces a fresh direction for the series while still keeping familiar faces like Elise Rainier.

What I enjoyed most was the atmosphere. The dim lighting, eerie iconic soundtrack, and unsettling visuals reminded me why Insidious has always stood out from other horror franchises. There were a few jump scares that genuinely caught me off guard, but I think the movie shines more when it builds suspense instead of relying on sudden scares. And another thing that I like about this year movie is that the design of the devils is really terrifying, or a bit disgusting, but I assume that’s what makes them “devils”.

That said, I still think the original Insidious 1 remains the best in the series. The mystery surrounding The Further felt more terrifying when we knew less about it. Over the years, the franchise has expanded its mythology, and while that’s interesting, it also makes some of the newer movies feel a little overcomplicated. I also found parts of Out of the Further somewhat predictable because they followed the familiar formula. Many critics have shared similar opinions, praising the atmosphere but feeling the story doesn’t quite match the originality of the earlier films.

Overall, I’d give Insidious: Out of the Further an 8/10. It may not surpass the first two films, but it’s still an entertaining horror movie with creepy visuals, solid performances, and enough tension to keep fans invested. If you’ve been following the franchise for years like I have, it’s definitely worth a trip back into the Further, even if nothing will ever beat the thrill of experiencing the original for the first time.
